Places to Visit in Europe
Europe is one of the most diverse travel continents in the world, full of beautiful regions and holiday destinations. Whether it’s visiting one of its major cities or venturing in the beautiful nature, here are the best places to visit in Europe.
The beauty and splendor of historic cities such as Florence, Lucca and Siena. Those rolling hills and old farms. Those vineyards and winding country roads full of cypresses. Those medieval mountain towns. The old males in the central village spas. Those fresh pastas and olives. The delicious wine. Tuscany is as you see Italy in your dreams.
Norway has a natural beauty that most countries envy. When I saw a picture of Trolltunga a few years ago, I was immediately sold. This horizontal rock that protrudes about 350 meters above Lake Ringedals in Norway is an Instagram hit. Trolltunga can be reached via a heavy hike that takes about 10 to 12 hours.
Lake Bled is one of the highlights of Slovenia. In the middle of the lake is a wooded island with a charming church. You can reach it with a boat. Surrounded by the beautiful green surroundings of forests and rocks you feel the romance and you immediately understand why so many couples marry here.
One of the most beautiful places in Turkey is the uniquely shaped Cappadocia. The landscape of Cappadocia was formed millions of years ago by three large volcanic eruptions. Special rock formations alternate with special underground dwellings. Dozens of hot air balloons hover over these rock formations every day. This gives an enchanting image.
Rome is a true open-air museum and according to many, the most beautiful city in Italy and perhaps the most beautiful city in Europe. You will find the famous Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican City, the Castel Sant’Angelo, the Vittorio Emanuele monument and the Pantheon. And then there is the wonderful, chaotic street life of Rome, the atmospheric squares and streets, the excellent restaurants and the iconic espresso bars.
Greece has many islands, but if you can choose one, then opt for Santorini. The typical Greek island is famous and loved. The photos of the famous white houses with blue roofs of Oia are well spread over the internet. Santorini belongs to the islands of the Cyclades and a lot of travelers visit this island in the summer. What they find is a magically beautiful island, a white wonder.
Isle of Skye, Scotland
The rugged green-orange-brown landscape, with rocks, rolling landscapes and rugged coasts makes this one of the dream destinations in Europe. This region was used as a film location for various films and series, including the hit series Game of Thrones. Isle of Skye is the perfect destination for people who love an active holiday. Hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing are amongst the popular activities. You can also see a lot of wildlife in this region, such as dolphins, puffins and deer.
Wadden Islands, The Netherlands
There are five inhabited and three uninhabited islands lying in the Wadden Sea. This sea is so unique that it is protected by UNESCO, it is the world’s largest contiguous system of sand and mud flats that are dry during low tide. The Wadden Islands have something special: there is sea, beach and forest.
Northern Sweden belongs to the Lapland region, the Sami people and the reindeer. This region also extends over northern Finland and Norway, but put the Swedish part on your bucket list. And preferably go in winter: Swedish Lapland is the place for dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and – hopefully – watching the northern lights. Swedish Lapland is a unique, untouched piece of nature where you can stay in an ice hotel or igloo.
The Matterhorn, Switzerland
The Matterhorn is the most iconic mountain in Europe and perhaps in the world. The pyramid-shaped mountain is the symbol of Switzerland and one of the mountains that you must have seen at least once in your life. Climbing the Matterhorn is only reserved for the real pros, but at the base you can certainly make beautiful hikes. The Swiss village Zermatt is one of the best places to stay, if you want to check out this bucket list item.
Lake District, UK
The Lake District in England is appreciated by nature lovers for its high peaks, beautiful lakes and the meadows separated by stone walls. Sheep graze peacefully in this lovely landscape. Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Scafell Pike, the highest mountain, are located in the Lake District and attract many enthusiasts of hiking and nature tours.
Plitvice Lakes NP, Croatia
The Plitvice Lakes National Park, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, is located in the interior of Croatia, near the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina. The national park has a fairytale like nature: 16 beautiful lakes and 90 waterfalls are located in a beautiful, green area, with plenty of walking opportunities. The upper and lower lakes of the Plitvice are connected by cascades.
The Gullfoss is a waterfall in southern Iceland and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the Hvítá, a glacial river 10 km east of Geysir. The water that falls in the gorge produces beautiful rainbows when the sun shines on it. It is possible to reach the edge of the waterfall where the thunderous roar is overwhelming.
Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
The Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the village of Hohenschwangau, not far from the town of Füssen, in the German state of Bavaria. It was the inspiration for the Disney castle and when you visit it, you can see why. Its location is enchanting. If you want to experience in a way that avoids the huge crowds, you can opt to go paragliding above it.
